Digital printing is a unique printing process. The printed image is
on a computer which can transmit it directly to the press. Given that
the press is digitally driven, the data can be customized and vary
from print-to-print as quick as the printing system can image it.
This process varies significantly from offset printing, which is
only capable of handling one original document at a time. Although
unit costs are slightly higher on digital presses versus offset
printing, its advantages more than outweigh the benefits of this
older method.
New digital presses are designed for fewer copies - as few as one
copy. There is little or no variable press cost because there is
little or no make-ready involved. Therefore, you can print
what you need, when you need it. Shorter runs have higher
unit costs, but this is often offset be decreased storage cost and
more importantly, by the greater flexibility of the printed material.
With digital printing systems, document obsolescence can
be eliminated.
